Academic Maria Ester Henriques Tavares was born in Lisbon in 1951 and became a naturalized Brazilian citizen in 1973. Graduated in Law from UERJ in 1977, she joined the Military Public Ministry in 1992, working at various prosecutor's offices, including Salvador, Juiz de Fora, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Brasília. She was promoted to Military Justice Prosecutor in 1997 and, in 2004, appointed Attorney General of Military Justice, a position she held until 2008. During her tenure, she implemented reforms, such as creating new positions and improving the structure of the prosecutor's office. In 2009, she was elected a member of the National Council of the Public Prosecution Service, where she served until 2013. In 2021, she was promoted to Deputy Attorney General of Military Justice, a position she holds at the Office of the Attorney General of Military Justice, in Brasília. In addition to her legal work, Maria Ester has given lectures and participated in working groups, such as the one on firearms control in Rio de Janeiro. She has received numerous decorations and participated in international conferences, such as the 7th International Conference on Military Criminal Law in Budapest.
