ABOUT ME
Dr. Paulo Renato Barreiros da Fonseca was born on November 30, 1961. He is the father of Lívia and Luísa, grandfather of Joaquim and Vicente, and married to Patrícia Fonseca, maintaining a balanced personal life between family and a medical career of great scientific and social relevance.
He graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO) in 1986, an institution where he also specialized in Anesthesiology. In 1989, after passing a public examination, he became a university professor, beginning a solid academic career. He furthered his training in pain management at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) and obtained the titles of Specialist in Anesthesiology and Pain Management, recognized by the Brazilian Medical Association (AMB) and the Brazilian Society of Anesthesiology (SBA). He also holds training in headache medicine from the International Headache Society (IHS), being a member of the Brazilian Headache Society and working as a headache specialist.
In 2006, after completing an MBA in Health Management from Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV-RJ), he founded the Aliviar Medicina da Dor clinic, dedicated to the integral and humanized treatment of pain. In 2017, the clinic received international certification from the World Institute of Pain (WIP), with the Excellence in Pain Practice Award (EPP), recognition that reaffirms its commitment to clinical excellence and patient well-being.
He served as coordinator of the PainMaster and OrthoDor courses at Faculdade Sinpain, pioneering programs in pain training in Brazil, where he was also a partner and professor. He was professor and coordinator of the postgraduate program in pain at Ensino Einstein – Rio de Janeiro Unit, contributing decisively to the training of specialists in the field.
He is a founding member of the Latin American Pain Society (LAPS), part of its advisory board and the radiofrequency and cryoneurolysis committee, and a member of the World Institute of Pain, an institution from which he earned, in 2015, the title of Fellow of Interventional Pain Practice (FIPP), having also served on the international board of examiners for this certification. He was President of the Brazilian Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (SOBRAMID) for the 2018-2019 term and of the Brazilian Society for the Study of Pain (SBED) between 2020 and 2022.
He has significant scientific and editorial output, having served as editor, co-editor, coordinator, and author of important reference works in the field of pain, including the Brazilian Treatise on Pain, the Brazilian Treatise on Oncological Pain, the Treatise on Neuropathic Pain, the Treatise on Musculoskeletal Pain, the Pain Manual of Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, and Pain Medicine – Principles and Practices, consolidating his contribution to the advancement of interventional pain medicine in Brazil.
He currently serves as Technical and Clinical Director of the Aliviar Medicina da Dor clinics in Barra da Tijuca (RJ) and São José dos Campos (SP), professor and mentor at Pro Clinic Academy, guest speaker at national and international scientific events, and author and researcher dedicated to disseminating knowledge about chronic pain. He is also founder and coordinator of the YouTube channel "A Dor Nossa de Cada Dia" and a columnist for the magazine "O Esteto," of the Medical Association of Nova Iguaçu (RJ).
